The textbooks I have used for my various science classes are excellent, SECULAR (Non-Christian) resources providing some of the finest overviews of "operational/observational" biological science available today. However, being SECULAR (Non-Christian) textbooks, their presentation of "historical/origins" science presents an atheistic, macroevolutionary worldview. This is actually good, since it allows our students the opportunity to exercise logikos, critical thinking while evaluating the evidence for a macroevolutionary vs. a creation worldview of life origins. To facilitate this critical thinking, we integrate research from world renowned scientists that are also courageously biblical, Christian/Creationists standing against censorship and peer-pressure persecution to speak the truth about our Creator and His Good Shepherd character.  They include:

All of us in the NCS Middle School Bible department are excited about the new Answers Bible Curriculum we will begin this year.  It’s a three-year chronological study of God’s history (i.e., His-story) developed by a team from Answers in Genesis.  Answers in Genesis (AiG) is an apologetics ministry that includes internationally recognized scholars in both Scripture and science.  AiG is committed to training Christians to honor God our Father, defend their faith, and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ in a loving and effective way.  

The Answers Bible Curriculum (ABC) teaches students how to apply Bible interpretation skills (hermeneutics).  It presents the history of the world in seven key historical periods called the “7-C’s” that are easy to remember.  Relevant Scripture verses and passages will be memorized for life application.  The first “C” stands for Creation, because our Creator’s revelation of ORIGINS (how, why, and when He created all things) is the foundation undergirding every major Christian doctrine.  Since Christ, God’s Word - our Creator - is the cornerstone of this foundation, our 8th graders will begin at the beginning.  They will start with the foundational truths of Genesis and then work/walk their way on through Exodus. All along the way, students will utilize the rest of the Bible, learning to interpret each passage in the context of all Scripture.

As the year unfolds, we will EXPAND these 7-C's of His-story, to 10 C's. The purpose is to deepen and broaden our understanding of God and His loving purpose in Creation and Salvation.

Supplemental Materials for CRITICAL THINKING about evolution vs. creation:
* New content will be included, especially exciting updates from a symposium on genetics, epigenetics, and Intelligent Design that I was invited to attend on the campus of Cornell University in 2011. Twenty-five scientists presented to about 100 attendees, most of whom were PhD scientists or PhD students (yes I was way out of my league -J).  These scholars shared amazing new discoveries, research, and conclusions demonstrating the impossibility of macroevolution by mutations. The only logical, scientific, and of course spiritual explanation for the massive coded information in living systems is a supernatural Intelligent Designer NOT natural chemical processes. To facilitate this critical thinking when we discuss Scripture passages about ORIGINS, students will examine research from world renowned scholars that are Christian/Creationists.

HUMAN Roles, Ranks, Responsibilities:  
Genesis Ch 1 states that humans (male and female) were created in God's image, to reflect His kind of character.
- It says that humans were to rule over and have dominion over the other creatures. So clearly humans were given delegated authority under God's Lordship. Humans' role and rank of authority or leadership is certainly to be over the rest of creation.
* The question we need to answer: "What kind of leadership (authority) should it be?" In this section, you will discover the answer using the Blue Letter Bible and our dialog in class.
- Chapter 2:15 further delineates the type of leadership humans were created to exercise over creation. Two Hebrew terms are used in Gen 2:15 to describe human leadership that reflects the character of our Creator Christ (John 1:1-5).

You will be able to describe the literal meaning of the two Hebrew terms ABAD and SHAMAR in 2:15 that are often poorly translated as “tend”, or “cultivate”, or “work” for abad and as "keep" for shamar. Our modern use of the English word "keep" usually just means to sort of "hang onto" something or store it away. The OLD KJV English meaning of "keep" and even more, the Hebrew original term shamar, meant much more. The key to understanding the meaning of Genesis 2:15 is found in how many times this Hebrew term is used in the Old Testament (OT).  What is the most common English word that it is translated into?  How many times is it translated into that term? Examples of verses in the OT where it is translated using the most common English word.

To even further understand the meaning of God's created role for humans as recorded in Gen. 1:26-31 and 2:15, it's important to compare those passages with Matthew 5:43-48; 20:24-28; and Romans 5:5-10.
The New Testament (NT) and especially the life of Jesus reveal even more of God's full purpose for humans. Over history, God gradually revealed more and more about Himself and His Way to fallen, rebellious humans. This process is called in theology, PROGRESSIVE REVELATION. From Genesis to The Revelation, God progressively unfolds HIS kind of “RULE” or “DOMINION” or “LEADERSHIP”. Since we are created in His IMAGE, we followers of Christ the Good Shepherd should reflect God’s character, His Way as we rule over His earthly creation. That includes NOT ONLY our treatment of other humans, but also our treatment OVER His nephesh animals. Remember, they are His NOT ours!

“Now there is a final reason I think that Jesus says, "Love your enemies." It is this: that love has within it a redemptive power. - Why did Jesus reply with another question and what question was it?
- What was the lawyer's answer to Jesus?
- What did Jesus say about the man's answer?
- What does it mean in verse 29 that the man was seeking to JUSTIFY himself by asking "Who is my neighbor?"
- Why do you think Jesus answer the man with a story about different people instead of just giving a short answer?
- The traveling man who was attacked was coming from Jerusalem, so he was a Jewish man. The priest who did NOT stop and help him was a Jewish priest. The Levite who AVOIDED him was a Jewish leader.
- WHY do you think the priest and Levite did not help?
- Who were the SAMARITAN'S and what did Jews think of them? Was the Jewish man basically a friend or an enemy of Samaritans?
- Based on the story, why was the Samaritan's help a great sacrifice and even a danger for him to do it?
- Which one of the men who saw the nearly dead Jewish man acted with real LOVE?
- What did Jesus command the "lawyer" Bible teacher to go and do?

** NEXT WEEK as we research and study toward the next TEST we will examine the rest of the Bible about these concepts. We will discover HOW and WHY Jesus's command to the "lawyer" at the end of the Good Samaritan story was MUCH MORE than what it seems.
- Jesus was commanding PERFECT LOVE, not just better love. (Matt. 5:48)
- Jesus was convicting the "lawyer" to help him see that NO ONE can make themselves good enough to enter God's heaven of eternal life. (Romans 3:23; 6:23; James 2:10 etc.) THIS IS BAD NEWS.
- The GOSPEL means "GOOD NEWS". It is totally opposite of every man-made religion on earth. All man-made religions offer some "Way" that people can do some kind of works or efforts to make themselves worthy to enter heaven after death.
- ONLY the WAY of our CREATOR revealed in the Bible offers salvation by GRACE alone through FAITH alone in GOD and His work and not ours (Ephesians 2:8-10).
* How did Moses get saved go to heaven, yet he never heard the name JESUS or had the opportunity to read the rest of the Bible written after he died?

* What is the difference between two men in India, BOTH of whom have never heard of Jesus or the Bible or Christianity?

- one is a man in India who tries to work his own way to "heaven" by doing a bunch of good things that his Hinduism or Buddhism says will balance his selfishness and make him "good enough".

- the other man in India has tried what the first man did but then realized that he cannot pay for his own selfishness, cannot make himself good enough, and INSTEAD he prays for the Creator to do whatever is needed to make him worthy to enter the Creator's pure "heaven".

GOD'S LAW OF LOVE vs. PREJUDICE (Favoritism/Discrimination) James 2:1-13

1. What is favoritism?  (GOOGLE it.)
2. In vv. 2-4, describe the example the Holy Spirit gave us through James.
3. In v. 5, for what purpose does it say God CHOSE the POOR?
4. In v. 6-7, what have the RICH done that makes them unworthy of honor?
5. What is the ROYAL law?
6. Why is it called ROYAL?
7. In vv. 9-11, especially v. 10, how good do you have to be to be OK with God and go to heaven?
8. Why is the law of LOVE in v. 8 LATER called the law of LIBERTY (FREEDOM) in verse 12?

10. In the news currently, we see that a serious and dangerous conflict is boiling up over some NFL players KNEELING and others STANDING
* SADLY, many people are NOT trying to see the situation THROUGH THE EYES & HEARTS of others who are thinking and feeling DIFFERENTLY from them.

"People look at the outward appearance,
but the LORD looks at the heart."
1 Samuel 16:7

The RESULT is MISUNDERSTANDING, then ASSUMPTIONS, then HURT FEELINGS, then a vicious CYCLE OF CONFLICT spins out of control. THIS IS NOT THE WAY OF CHRIST. It's the way of Satan and sin on BOTH SIDES. ALL people are SINNERS.

Most of the people who are KNEELING during the national anthem song for our country are in their HEARTS simply trying to draw attention to racism in our country against dark melanin people, especially by SOME POLICE, but NOT all. I have many friends in law enforcement who are humble, loving, self-sacrificing Christians (ranging from the FBI, ATF, ICE, FEDERAL MARSHALLS, State Troopers, local Sheriff's Deputies, Police Officers). Through them, I know that the MAJORITY of law enforcement care about all people in need and risk their lives to serve and protect them. They are the courageous SHEEPDOGS who are ready to SACRIFICE their lives for the SHEEP-PEOPLE (Sheeple).

* The majority of people stand with their hand on their heart during the national anthem. What's in their heart? Why do they stand. They stand as a show of respect for soldiers who gave their life fighting for our freedom in wars. Many on both sides are bitterly angry at people on the other side.  Some on BOTH sides have said things in ways that are INACCURATE and UNCHRISTLIKE.
* Remember Jesus’s LAW of LOVE that DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING Jr. preached and lived out in his actions.
A. Why is it wrong for you or me to JUDGE the HEART MOTIVE of WHY some stand and some kneel?
B. Write an example of how a person on each side of the debate might have the RIGHT MOTIVE, but DO the WRONG ACTION (either words and behavior):
- Example of someone who supports the KNEELERS:
Put yourself in their shoes. Even if you DISAGREE, try to see and feel through their hearts. WHY might they be doing WHAT they are doing?
- Example of someone who supports the STANDERS:
Put yourself in their shoes. Even if you DISAGREE, try to see and feel through their hearts. WHY might they be doing WHAT they are doing?

Here's a PARTIAL list of ONLY a FEW passages revealing God's Law of Self-sacrificing love.
* REMEMBER that God revealed His full truth PROGRESSIVELY as HISTORY unfolded. History is HIS-STORY and His pure loving character gradually revealed in CONTRAST to OUR STORY of selfish sin, our desires to please self. We are infinitely less than our Creator in goodness and cannot make ourselves good ENOUGH to enter into His pure realm. He and He alone must FORGIVE us and TRANSFORM us (born-again and resurrected) into His image and character. The New Testament actually uses the Greek term for METAMORPHOSIS to describe our need and His promise to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.

OLD TESTAMENT (OT) Teaches the Law of Love

Genesis 1:1-5 (check out the connection of this first passage in the Bible with the Gospel of John 1:1-5 and the letter of First John Ch. 1 and verses 1-5 & chapter 2:5 & chapter 4:8. GOD IS LOVE.

Genesis 1:26-31 All people and all nephesh animals were created to live in harmony, loving one another with NO selfishness, no violence, no predators. (See Isaiah 11which promises that God's new heavens and new creation to come will be just like it was in the beginning)

Genesis 2:15 God said He created humans to be SERVANT RULERS taking care of one another and other creatures. The Hebrew terms translated as words like tend and keep in many English Bible are ABAD and SHAMAR.
ABAD means to be a SERVANT. SHAMAR means to be PROTECTOR.
* See Matthew 20:20-28 to see how JESUS further explains and make this law of love clear even for leaders.

Genesis 3 Many people miss the central simple message of the sin of Satan through the serpent and of Adam and Eve. SIN is simply the opposite of God's self-sacrificing love. Sin is SELFISHNESS that seeks to please self instead of others. We try to excuse it and rationalize that our selfishness is not so bad and really doesn't hurt anyone else, but ultimately and eternally it does. It's the refusal to let God live His pure love through us. At the root, even "little" selfish sins are an expression of the inner heart attitude of sacrificing others for the DESIRES of self. Christ's love is the opposite. It's sacrificing self for the NEEDS of others. (See Romans 5:8)

Exodus 20 The TEN COMMANDMENTS are simply expressions of God's Law or Way of Love. The first four are how to live out love for God. The last six are how to live out love for our neighbor.
* Leviticus 19:18 is a direct command to love our neighbor.
* Jesus is recorded in Matthew 22:36-40 explaining that ALL of the Old Testament laws can be summed up in vertically lovingr God and horizontally loving your neighbor (someone in need).

Deuteronomy 6:1-9 This is a commandment to pass this Law of love on to each new generation.

Proverbs 25:21 This verse give an example of our self-sacrificing God's love living through us should be. It says, "If your enemy is hungry give him food to eat. If he is thirsty, give him water to drink. Doing this will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you."
The burning coals statement is a metaphor for the enemy experience conviction and shame because you did not act like an enemy back to him, but instead you were a friend.

* Recognize that to whatever degree a CULTURE (not color) FALLS SHORT of the CHARACTER of our CREATOR CHRIST, it is BAD to that degree. This even applies to supposed "CHRISTIAN" cultures like England or America.

Also, realize that there is NO single "black" or even "African-American" culture. I have friends born in Africa whose culture is not at all like the TV version of black or African-American culture. They do not fit the Tyler Perry movies stereotype. I also have many friends born in America who describe themselves as African-American who have family cultures that are very different from each other. I have many light-melanin friends with European ancestry who were born in America that have VERY different sub-cultures. Some are country folks and others were raised in the heart of big cities.

- If you are a reborn Christian, be led by God's Word & Spirit.
If not, then at least try to use God's Word and the principles written in it. See the verses above to get started.
- How did Jesus respond to people and authorities (His enemies) who called Him names, mocked Him, spit on Him, beat Him, and killed Him?
- What effect did Jesus's response have on individual people, on families, on the world?
- Was His choice to love His enemies really worth all of the hurt and suffering and death that He endured?

Wm. Wilberforce, Christ v. Slavery

This award winning movie is historically accurate. It beautifully reveals the story of how God used a small, weak, meek, sick man (William Wilberforce). Wilberforce's pastor was John Newton, the ex-slave ship captain who became a follower of Christ and wrote AMAZING GRACE. He was the primary person to do two powerful and important things for God's honor:
1. Led the end of African slavery in England & America.
2. Started first Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

It is a book about his own life in Africa, kidnapped with his sister and held captive on a slave ship, his slave life, and most of all his faith in God through Christ Jesus who gave his life for all of His created souls who suffer under the oppression of sin and slave-masters.
